How To Create A Zen Space In Your Home

Creating a space to recharge and unwind is essential when trying to maintain peace and balance in an increasingly busy world. However, not many of us know where to start when it comes to creating the perfect zen space in any property.
According to well-known holistic guru, Deepak Chopra, we experience healing through all of our senses – sight, smell, sound, taste and touch; and it is with these senses that you should start when completing a relaxing chillout room.


Begin by addressing the aesthetics of the room which affect sight. It’s important to create a visually beautiful space that helps to calm the senses and create an inviting atmosphere. Start by removing all clutter. Unnecessary clutter blocks energy flow creating a stagnant space. Clearing your environment of unneeded items allows positive energy to synergise your senses.
Next, you want to place a few items in the room which you find visually peaceful. This may be images of landscapes, flowers or symbols of peace and vitality such as the Ying/Yang. It is easy, inexpensive and will turn your little space into an evergreen sanctuary of calm and relaxation. Scents such as Ylang Ylang are well known for its calming and balancing properties and works well in both a small or large indoor space. Your scent can be dispersed with oil burners, candles, incense and fresh flowers.


Music, chimes, water fountains or silence are all options that appeal to your innate point of calm. You can make your own relaxing playlist and use that as a makeshift timer. Traditionally, songs of around 20 to 30 minute duration are most conducive to a peaceful state as they allow you to relax within the beat of the music for a set time without transition. There is a reason why tea is associated with healing. It works. Take the time to try a number of different teas that have healing or calming properties. It earthy taste also can help people with digestive and inflammatory issues. Having a small tea set either on the floor or on a small table can warm both the mind and body.
If you are not a tea drinker then why not try a homemade herbal elixir using cucumber, mint and lemon steeped in water for two hours for a refreshing and alkalizing drink.


No zen space is complete without incorporating soft textures like pillows and throw rugs made of materials designed to sooth and hold the body. You may also like to incorporate other textures like stone, moss, metals or water (such as a splash bowl) in the room. That special touch can aid in relaxation and comfort.
The art of Feng Shu is also important here, arrange your cushions, beanbags and couches in a way that creates a positive energy and an even flow throughout the room.
Once your space is complete you can use it for meditation, relaxation and stillness. It’s really up to you. Just remember this is your space to enjoy not just the best room in the castle. So make sure you use it.
