Indoor plants at home Photo: Larnie Nicolson

There is no denying that indoor plants have become an extremely popular addition to the modern home.

However, which plants should you choose and how do you fit them into your home? To get you started, NZ House &Garden‘s art director (and plant aficionado), Richard Brunton, has shared some of his top tips for how to style indoor plants.

MATCH YOUR PLANTER TO YOUR INTERIORS

“Matching your vase or planter to the colour or style of your decor is simple way to create a stylish, harmonious living space,” Brunton says.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

Do you live in an apartment or a property with a limited backyard? Brunton recommends you “bring the outdoors in” and create your own Garden of Eden indoors.

“Indoor plants add life to every room, they are a lovely finishing touch to your home and can act as a piece of art. The glorious thing about many plants is that they get better over time and can turn your home into an indoor garden.”

SEASONAL BRANCHES

A seasonal branch in an entryway or at the end of a hall serves as an elegant finishing touch.

CHOOSE A STATEMENT VASE

A statement vase will add an additional point of interest to your room.

“A dome or a bottle-shaped vase in an interesting colour can look amazing in the right space.”

PLANTS IN DARK SPACES BRING LIGHT

Have a particularly dark home or a room with darker decor? Plants are an excellent way to bring light to dark spaces.

CACTI. YES OR NO?

Cacti. You either love them or you hate them. Brunton suggests a cactus as the perfect plant for the time-pressed person who likes low maintenance plant-life.

“In the right space, they can look really interesting.”

TUMBLING FERNS

A tumbling fern, perched in a high place, never fails to look stylish.

“Sit them on a high windowsill, on the top of a bookshelf or from a hanging planter and watch as your natural veil grows.”

WHY NOT GO ALL OUT?

If you have a larger space to work with, why not purchase a small potted tree for your living room? Or, you could do as these homeowners did and plant an actual tree on your entryway.

If this isn’t ‘#indoorplantgoals’ we don’t know what is.

RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY

Brunton recommends prospective plant owners look up the type of plant they want to buy before heading to the checkout.

“This will tell you how much care it needs, if it responds well to lots of light and how much it will grow. Googling this information while you’re still in the store will allow you to determine whether or not you have the right space for the type of plant you want to buy, before you waste any money,” he says.
